Last year, we launched the Network Modernization Project, a multi-year initiative to upgrade the campus network. While this project includes critical enhancements like faster Wi-Fi, expanded wireless coverage, and greater network capacity, it also creates the secure and robust foundation Mines must have to access research grant funding, meet our cyber insurance requirements, and adhere to long-standing Mines policies.

What to Expect: Changes Coming for Non-IT Managed Computers
As we roll out the new network—starting with Berthoud and Guggenheim in February, followed by other buildings through the spring—you’ll notice some important changes that will impact non-IT managed computers (NOTE: IT-managed computers will be unaffected by the new network rollout).

  • VPN/GlobalProtect Access: To access internal resources that haven’t transitioned to the cloud, users of non-IT managed computers will need to sign into VPN/GlobalProtect. Resources like Banner and Canvas will remain accessible without VPN.
  • HIP (Host Integrity Protocol) Health Checks: Non-IT managed devices will undergo health checks when signing into VPN/GlobalProtect. While this semester’s checks won’t block access, they’ll help identify areas for improvement.

Starting May 19, 2025, non – IT managed devices must meet these HIP Check security requirements to connect.

These measures ensure our network remains secure while providing fast, reliable access across campus. This project is more than an IT upgrade—it’s an investment in the future of learning, research, and discovery at Mines.
