Zoom Web Conferencing

Welcome to the Colorado School of Mines video conferencing service Zoom, our cloud-based video and web-conferencing solution. Zoom lets Mines students, faculty, and staff join or host video conferences on any Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android device (and more). Zoom is also the official Mines instant-messaging/chat application.

Anyone with active Mines credentials already has a Mines Zoom account. When you’re ready to try Zoom, click the Zoom tile in MyMines or head over to https://mines.zoom.us and sign in with your Mines credentials. (Don’t worry, your Mines credentials are secure and never leave Mines.)

If you need more detailed installation directions, please consult the following knowledge base articles:

By default, Zoom users have Basic accounts, which come with some restrictions. Most notably, Basic Zoom sessions are limited to 40 minutes each. As a Mines user, however, IT provides you with a “licensed” (sometimes called Pro) Zoom account, which doesn’t have this restriction.

To continue providing Zoom cloud recording access to the Mines community, IT has implemented a retention policy for all Zoom cloud recordings (effective November 1, 2018). A retention plan is necessary to balance increased use of Zoom cloud recording with a finite amount of storage. Here are the details of this policy:

  • All Zoom cloud recordings will be automatically deleted 120 days after they are recorded.
  • 120 days after a Zoom meeting is recorded to the Zoom Cloud, the recording is moved to the Trash and a 30-day grace period starts.
    • During the 30-day grace period, deleted recording files can be restored for an additional 24-hour period.
    • The 24-hour time period allows restored recordings to be downloaded locally so they are not permanently lost.
    • After the 24-hour time frame, recordings are again placed in the Trash and queued for deletion.
    • After the 30-day grace period, cloud recording files will be permanently deleted.
  • In addition to automatic 120-day deletion, IT will contact anyone using a significant amount of Zoom cloud recording storage to help identify additional storage or hosting options.
Frequently Asked Zoom Questions

How do I review my current Zoom Cloud recordings?

You can access and review your current Zoom cloud recordings at https://mines.zoom.us/recording (you may need to log in with your Mines MultiPass credentials).

Can I download/archive my Zoom cloud recordings?

Yes, if you wish to retain or reuse your Zoom cloud recordings, you may download the recordings to your computer and store them on your computer or another third-party service such as Microsoft OneDrive. Instructions on how to located and download cloud recordings are available at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206277393-How-Do-I-Find-My-Recording.

If I download my Zoom cloud recordings, can I still share them with my colleagues, students, etc.?

Yes, downloaded Zoom recording videos can be uploaded to other services and shared. For example, recordings can be uploaded to a Canvas course and shared with students. Recordings can also be uploaded to Microsoft’s Stream video hosting solution and shared/streamed with others. Because audio and video files tend to be very large, it is generally not recommended to email these files. Contact ITS via the Mines Help Center (https://helpcenter.mines.edu/) if you would like additional assistance on how best to share your videos.

Instead of recording to the Zoom cloud, can I record to my computer?

Yes, instead of recording Zoom meetings to the cloud, you may also record locally. The local recording option stores the files directly on the computer you are using to participate in the Zoom meeting. Instructions and information on local recording are available at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362473-Local-Recording.

I’ve heard about issues with privacy/security – what can you tell me?

Please visit https://it.mines.edu/zoom-privacy-security/ to address these concerns.

How do I get more help?
